I doubt anyone is surprised by the overt arrogance that is still starching the pants of Saddam Hussein. Let us not forget that this man is a study of Stalin and Hitler and he was trained in an Egyptian law school.
He knows his days are over, but he’ll use these last hours as a forum whenever possible. I think it’s important that we not give him a forum and allow him to become the new focal point of Iraqi politics, but the United States probably has only limited influence on the Iraqi run court proceedings.
Christiane Amanpour, as usual not missing the chance to score a hit on President Bush, delivers this latest CNN report:
Appearing before a judge in a 30-minute hearing, Saddam looked thin and downcast, but became animated as proceedings unfolded.
When he was ushered into the court, the judge asked him his name and twice he said, “I am Saddam Hussein, the president of Iraq.”
The judge asked whether he understood his rights and could afford counsel. Saddam pointed his finger at the judge, asking whose jurisdiction the court was under.
He was read seven preliminary charges outlined in his arrest warrant, which involve the invasion of Kuwait in 1990, suppression of the Kurdish and Shiite uprising in 1991, political killings, religious killings and the gassing of the Kurds.
