I just received this email from the kind folks over at FMCAT. If only all the world’s Muslims were as pluralist, humane and educated as FMCAT members, the Earth would be a far safer place:
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/28/04) - The Free Muslim Coalition Against Terrorism has learned that the Saudi Islamic Academy, located in Alexandria, Virginia is teaching an extreme version of Islam to its first grade students.
Six-year-old children at the Islamic Academy are using a first grade textbook in which teachers are instructed to disparage Christianity and Judaism. The book is similar to the books used in Saudi Arabia which are circulated by the Saudi Ministry of Education.
Lesson nine on page 19 of the textbook in a section called “Monotheism and Figh” instructs the teacher to explain to students that the religions of Jews and Christians are false religions.
The lessons taught by the Islamic Academy are clearly rejected by moderate Muslims and the Holy Koran. Chapter II, Verse 136 of the Koran states: “We believe in God, and the revelation given to us, and to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and that given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to (all) Prophets from their Lord: we make no difference between one and another of them: and we bow to God.”
The President of FMCAT, Kamal Nawash stated: “we condemn the teaching of extremist Muslim ideology to impressionable first grade students any where in the world and especially here in the United States.” Nawash went on to say that “the ideology taught at the Saudi Islamic Academy in Virginia is similar to the ideology relied on by Osama Bin Laden and other Muslim extremists to justify the murder of innocent Muslims, Christian and Jews around the world.”
The Free Muslim Coalition Against Terrorism demands that the Saudi Academy change its curriculum to teach their students respect between followers of different religions and coexistence so that their students can learn to function in a diverse world.
If the Academy has fundamental problems with removing the offensive material from their curriculum then they should close down.
Please contact the Saudi Islamic Academy and demand that they change their curriculum.

This “ideology” that is referred to in the above statement is otherwise known as Wahhabism. You’ve heard of that before if you are a regular reader here.
