Several people have commented to me that we should only expect the same as we have gotten in Iraq if we aid the Persians (Iranians) in overthrowing their Islamic government.
Let me point out that on my blog you will find more than a couple of links to Iranian websites that are run by dissidents. These links have been here for two years. Feel free to go witness for yourself:
Iranians are not 100% Muslim. In fact, many of them are purely secular. They also, if you meet them in person, tend to prefer to call themselves Persians. There is and has been a growing movement to return to the roots of Iran, and tossing away the changes that have come along as a result of Islamic influence is typified by this want to return to the historic name of their nation.
Part of this rebellious nature also stems from the fact that Persians are a completely different ethnic group from the Arabs that predominate as Muslims of the Middle East. This is not a small thing in that region — as the Kurds and Jews have shown us, our truest allies in that turbulent region tend to be non-Arab: cultural loyalties tend to make for stronger revolutions.
No, I am confident that we will not see “more of the same” when we take out the violent terrorist regime that has been holding Iran under its thumb for too long. But then, I also would hold that our military and President Bush should not deal lightly with killers and jihadists in Iran. Crush the enemy like we should always do in the Middle East, because to not do this only emboldens the Islamists who we know by now just react like hyena to any sign of weakness or hesitancy.
No matter what happens though, the bottom line here is that we can NOT allow Iran to gain nuclear weaponry. I don’t care what veiled threats China or Russia might toss at us — if we have to fight a world war to keep nuclear weapons out of the hands of madmen and terrorists, then so be it, because to not do so will just assuredly make our lives hell for decades to come as we are systematically terrorized with the worst of weapons on our own home soil. I’m sure no sane Americans wish to see such an eventuality.
