Hugh Fitzgerald of Jihad Watch writes:
“It has all failed. And that is despite the enormous efforts of American soldiers, who were never taught about Islam, and yet persevered, and were puzzled when the Muslims of Iraq did not behave, as those soldiers expected them to, as a grateful “Iraqi people,” but rather as a collection — with a handful of exceptions — of grasping, whining, greedy, meretricious people, eager to have the Americans do everything for them, eager to have them lavish them with aid money (thrown around, by the billions, like confetti), and distinctly indifferent to American losses when not taking outright pleasure in such losses, yet always willing to blame the Americans for everything.”
I have never read a better summation of the quagmire in Iraq than that, and of the Arab Muslim mindset in general.
Use our current bases to break the backbone of Iranian and Syrian infrastructure, then leave the region entirely. That’s what I would do, right now, starting today.
Shock and Awe — and Withdraw.

Bush’s folly, based on ignorance of Islam and stubborness, has been costly in lives and $$$’s. I say stubborn because Bush made up his mind that Islam is a ‘religion of peace’ hijacked by extremists shortly after 9/11. He still believes to this day that the jihadists are distorting Islam. That is how stupid he is.
Amen to that. The military’s job is to destroy an enemy’s warmaking capacity, not to build nations. Saddam’s military was neutralized four years ago. Let Iraqis do what they will with their country-build it or annihilate it. If one of Bush’s goals in 2003 was to turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse it was insane from the very start. The US has expended enough blood and money on behalf of an ungrateful people more interested in killing one another than in building a viable nation-it’s time to start going home and prepare for the next conflict. The one with Iran.
