Better news for a change. From the AP:
A White House-backed bill to revamp immigration laws stalled in the Senate on Thursday, handing President George W. Bush a major legislative setback.
The sharply divided Senate refused to limit debate on the fragile compromise hammered out by a bipartisan group of senators and the White House. The vote was 45-50, 15 short of the 60 votes needed to advance major legislation in the Senate.
As a result of the action, the legislation was set aside and the Democratic-majority Senate moved on to other legislation.
The bill, which has drawn fire from both the right and the left, ties tough border security and workplace enforcement measures to a plan to legalize most of the 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States.
Supporters scrambled throughout the day on Thursday to patch together an agreement that would have allowed the bill to advance toward a final vote in the Senate. The deal painstakingly negotiated by a bipartisan group of senators and the White House began to unravel after a series of amendments that backers said upset its balance.
Republicans sought to offer more amendments and said they would not be rushed into closing debate on the bill.
“The majority is simply not going to get anywhere trying to stuff the minority and prevent the amendment process,” said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.
Sen. Edward Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat who helped negotiate the legislation, said he would continue to push for the legislation.
“This issue is not going to go away,” Kennedy said.
Well then, Ted, why don’t you try protecting the border first and seeking nice-nice with the illegals here second? There used to be a concept called the Rule of Law in this country, but when it seems like all that goes out the window for money or political expediency, I won’t hold my breath for a suitable resolution to this “issue” anytime soon.
I guess our government wants to watch more screw-ups cost American lives and then allow our politicians to initiate the blame game all over again. Brilliant.

Given our governments penchant for passing unpopular bills after midnight we will need to keep an eye on this mess. How sad to have to say that.
If the pro-Illegals side wants what they want, they have to give the vast majority of the American people what we are demanding — and that’s actual border protection with a wall, not just spin.
Thankfully, it looks like this one “got past midnight” without passing.
Now the two sides can go back to business as usual — stonewalling and taking long breaks. Ah, such leaders…
I agree with David Carter - we have to keep an eye on them until we can vote them out. Sorry, but I’m of the mind now to vote out anyone who represents me if he/she has served more than two terms. That’s long enough that he/she is more a part of the problem than part of a solution. I don’t care if they’ve been very good on most things either. We’re in a new era and we need people without old era baggage.
I’ve cast off my former loyalties to the Democratic party and let them know the reasons why. It’s time to shed old ways of thinking if we’re going to be successful in meeting the jihad threat.
