Iraq bombers topple Samarra minarets

In a bold blow to Iraqi hopes for peace, suspected al-Qaida bombers toppled the towering minarets of Samarra’s revered Shiite shrine on Wednesday, adding new provocation to old wounds a year after the mosque’s Golden Dome was destroyed.

The attack stoked fears of a surge in violence between Muslim sects. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s government rushed to contain Shiite wrath against Sunnis: It clamped a curfew on Baghdad and asked for U.S. troop reinforcements in Samarra, 60 miles north of here, and for a heightened American military alert in the capital.

Memorial Day: Talks between U.S. and Iran begin

Interesting to choose Memorial Day as a day for the first official talks in 27 years between the U.S. and Iran. Just coincidence or could it be symbolic of some message that we intend to convey to Iran? I hope whatever is said, the Iranians get the message that we mean business and that deaths of Americans are going to be answered for. Do I think we can actually negotiate peace with Iran? Absolutely not — not until we deliver a message with fire and steel first.

Al-Qaida chief appointed head of Islamic Cabinet in Iraq

‘War with Islam’ Alert. From the AP:

A Sunni insurgent coalition posted Web videos on Thursday naming the head of al-Qaida in Iraq as “minister of war” and showing the execution of 20 men it said were members of the Iraqi military and security forces.

The announcement unveiling an “Islamic Cabinet” for Iraq appeared to have multiple aims. One was to present the Islamic State of Iraq coalition as a “legitimate” alternative to the U.S.-backed, Shiite-led administration of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki � and to demonstrate that it was growing in power despite the U.S. military push against insurgents.
