Freedom of Speech-in-Action: Robert Spencer at Young America’s Foundation

On August 2, 2007, Robert Spencer delivered a speech to the Young America’s Foundation conference in Washington, D.C. The infamous Council on American-Islamic Relations made loud legal threats against YAF in order to attempt to intimidate the organization into not having Spencer as a guest speaker. CAIR’s efforts proved fruitless as the YAF refused to relent the right to Freedom of Speech!

YAF spokesman Jason Mattera introduces Mr. Spencer.

Pipes and other experts advise Giuliani

Rudy Giuliani announces Presidential bid (video)While I do not wish this to be misconstrued as an endorsement of Rudy Giuliani for President of the United States, I do believe that it is very important for people to know when someone like Dr. Daniel Pipes is advising a candidate. Daniel Pipes is one of the few experts around that truly understands the threat of Islam, so having him act as adviser could never be a bad thing for any future U.S. President. Now, if someone would just have the good sense to take on Robert Spencer as an adviser, then I would most likely endorse them.

Defending Western Civilization

Important discussion at FrontPage between Jamie Glazov and Robert Spencer prompted by the publication of Spencer’s latest book, Religion of Peace?: Why Christianity Is and Islam Isn’t.

This especially jumped out at me (emphasis added):

“There is a logic to why leftist intellectuals support societies that butcher intellectuals, why leftist feminists support societies that mutilate women and why leftist homosexuals and minorities worship societies that barbarize homosexuals and minorities. It’s a death wish based on self-loathing. But perhaps this deeper discussion between us belongs in another forum.”

CAIR referencing Jim Sutter’s own hate for Islamist propaganda purposes

CAIR has reached an all-time low today. In an article on the CAIR website, the Islamist propaganda machine has actually referenced kooky Jim Sutter’s smear campaign as work to be taken seriously in the effort to shut down the free speech of author Robert Spencer and a circle of bloggers of which I am a known part.

Spencer warns: ‘Jihad will destroy us if we don’t do anything about it’

Author Robert Spencer gets a chance to stretch in an interview for a change. Here’s a taste from The Catholic Herald, ‘Jihad will destroy us if we don’t act now’:

“Above all, we shouldn’t fight among ourselves, but against global jihad. If we’re consumed with each other then we don’t stand a chance.

“Fascism lasted 25 years, Communism for 75; Islam is 1,400 years old, the imperative to make war against unbelievers is 1,400 years old and they believe they are fighting a 1,400-year-old struggle. And jihad will destroy us if we don’t do anything about it.”

Washington Times: Unblock Jihad Watch

Digg vs AnvilIn light of recent emails I’ve also received here at the Anvil, and because I’ve been a long-time supporter of Robert Spencer’s Jihad Watch, I am bringing this editorial to the attention of my readers today, hot off the Washington Times presses:

In the last few weeks, e-mails began trickling to Jihad Watch Director Robert Spencer that his Web site had been blocked on the senders’ office computers as “hate speech.” The same blocking was also happening in some instances against the site memri.org, a translator of Arabic-language media. The sites are being blocked by private firms such as General Electric and JPMorgan Chase, plus a few state and local government agencies, whose filtering services had somehow decided the sites were “hate speech.”

“Hate speech” exists on these sites, all right, but not the kind that filters should be blocking — not as long as there exist doubletalkers who say all the right things in English but breathe anti-Western fire in Arabic. These sites shed much-needed light on this phenomenon, and as long as private firms are allowing political content on office computers, they should not be duped into blocking some. How they got blocked in the first place is a story of political correctness run amok. But it is also a story of what happens when citizens speak out in opposition.

First, the good news. Over the last four days, blocks have been lifted at Fidelity Investments, Whirlpool and a handful of other major companies, Mr. Spencer reports, following a wave of complaints by users. The complaints trigger a corporate reality check, which causes some to reconsider. “People need to realize that this kind of filtering is politicized, just like anything else. Leftists will be willing to use filtering services” just like any other medium, Mr. Spencer says. Various and sundry pro-Islamist Internet opinionists slap the “hate speech” label repeatedly, hope it sticks and sometimes, it does. But with a counter-campaign, their work can be undone.

The other piece of good news is that federal agencies, especially the ones we’d most like to read such material, have not been duped. The sites are available on computers at the Department of Homeland Security, the Pentagon and the State Department, according to our correspondents. Whether they are actually read there is a separate matter with a likely depressing answer. But at least the material is available.

We don’t doubt that the corporate blockers do their blocking in many cases unwittingly through politically unsavvy filtering services which in turn find themselves on the receiving end of various political campaigns. All these companies simply want to avoid social or political controversy.

But it is not really possible to avoid taking a position here, irrespective of these firms’ rights to block whatever they choose to, as long as the policy is fair and consistent. Essentially, these firms must either block all political speech — and we would counsel strongly against this heavy-handedness — or they would need to allow a wide range of material through, with only very obviously pornographic or incendiary material being blocked.

With any other approach, firms will be caught in the type of politicization that Jihad Watch and MEMRI know all too well. It does not serve anyone’s interests.

And you can unblock Foehammer’s Anvil while you’re at it, you powers-that-be, if the rumors of my own continued censorship are true. I know some are undoubtedly so.

Kooky Jim Sutter: Good News on Spreading Ban of Hate Speech Site

Crazy ManYou know the old saying: “Good news travels fast, but bad news travels faster.” So it is that today I received a heads-up on the following claim that the Anvil has been added to “Hate Speech” filters by some institutions and businesses, right along with Jihad Watch and MEMRI (hat-tip: Lady Predator):

Good News! Getting the word out about the dangers of hate mongers is working!

Over the past few days, we have received encouraging news that more and more corporations, agencies, and Internet filtering systems are blacklisting or banning access to Jihad Watch, properly identifying it as a hate speech site. First, we received word that Spencer’s Jihad Watch site has, in very recent days, been blocked or banned by: City of Chicago, Chicago Police, Bank of America, Fidelity Investments, Deutsche Bank, the Veterans’ Administration, Washington Mutual, Site Coach (an Internet filtering program), GE, JP Morgan Chase, Defense Finance and Accounting Services, the U.S. Government, MSNBC, AFSCME, Marriott Corp., and American Airlines.

http://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/017242.php

Now we’ve received an update on the rapidly spreading ban on Jihad Watch. It has now been including in the commercial filtering of Secure Computing’s “WebWasher” as hate speech. This means that WebWasher’s 19,000 customers, supported by a worldwide network of partners, include the majority of the Dow Jones Global 50 and the most prominent organizations in banking, financial services, healthcare, telecommunications, manufacturing, public utilities, and federal and local governments, will now be blocking access to Jihad Watch. We have also learned that WebWasher has blocked the hate speech sites of HotAir and MEMRI, and that the Foehammer’s Anvil hate speech site has also been blocked or banned as hate speech by site monitoring services, and that other web filtering services are in the process of blocking Jihad Watch, et al.

Good job, and Congratulations to those who had the good sense to ban hate speech, recognizing that hate speech often leads to extremism, and extremism very often leads to terrorism. Secure Computing’s Webwasher seems to be the most alert program to use for filtering Internet content from obscenities, hate speech, and other unwanted sites.

The Jawa Report and Vigilant Freedom have both posted articles about this incident.

The “Reverend” Jim Sutter is a sham, a liar and now he’s getting dangerously close to receiving a certified letter from my attorney.

To any and all organizations, businesses and institutions that have seen fit to actually ban the Anvil: shame, shame, shame on you!

You may email Jim your love at: revjimsutter@gmail.com

I will waste no further time on this troglodyte today.

Spencer: Blogging the Qur’an

Robert Spencer continues a recent series that attempts to pull apart the individual suras of the Qur’an for readers at both Jihad Watch and Hot Air. It’s definitely worth a read.

I can’t help but shrug at this series, considering that I put together the first part of ‘Refuting Islam‘ a couple of months back in a very similar attempt, and although I believe mine is more accessible and entertaining, surely Spencer’s approach is more informative.

I don’t write to make friends, I write to defeat enemies

Uncle Sam: Buy War Bonds
Sometimes people wonder what the fundamental difference is between most anti-jihad sites and the Anvil. Well, an article from Jihad Watch this morning has a response from Robert Spencer that I can use to illustrate a couple of quick but important points.

Jihad Watch: CAIR op disavows intention to replace the Constitution with Sharia

CAIR vote volunteer

Since Robert Spencer has already done his usual fine job of putting together the interesting parts of a poignant story about Sharia in America and our wonderful friends at CAIR, I figured there’s no reason for me to rehash, so I’ll just dish instead. Go here. You’ll find I’ve already contributed in the comments section; but that’s nothing new if you’re not new to JW.

Q: How do you know a member of CAIR is lying?

A: His (or her — refer to photograph above) lips are moving.

Hot Air video: A word with Barack Obama

Please visit Hot Air: A word with Barack Obama and watch a video by Robert Spencer that discusses in great detail what I brought up in my article from yesterday, Barack Obama: Apostate from Islam? There are many quick facts declared here that all contesters of Islam should know, especially with regards to apostasy from Islam and how the ‘rules’ apply.
