41 Percent of Al Qaeda fighters in Iraq are Saudis

I just heard the most predictable factoid: 41% of Al Qaeda fighters in Iraq are Saudi Arabians. Apparently record keeping by some Al Qaeda higher-ups has been captured by the U.S. military and careful records have revealed a detailed accounting of the social and regional makeup of the Al Qaeda operatives inside Iraq. Many of these Islamic terrorists are being recruited directly off of Islamic college campuses across the Middle East and around the world. This, again, is quite predictable.

Helping TheReligionofPeace.com in order to help ourselves

The Religion of Peace Needs Our Help! No, not that ‘Religion of Peace.’

This one.

An individual that I refuse to name here again (but many of my regular readers will know of and who’s name may be found quoted below) has targeted the gentle folks at The Religion of Peace in an effort to shut down the site just as he attempted to shut down the Anvil and Jihad Watch and others. The results of this phony reverend’s actions provoked a number of internet companies to incorrectly categorize The Religion of Crazy ManPeace. These incorrect categories have caused the site to be listed as a hate site, and consequently blocked by some servers. I know that the accusations made by Sutter, and the various companies are patently false. The Religion of Peace provides accurate facts about Islam – not lies. The site is not racist. Islam is not a race but a political and cultist ideology. The Religion of Peace speaks out against all violence that is directed towards non-Muslims and Muslims alike.

From the editor at TheReligionofPeace.com:

Anyone who has a blog that attempts to defend the west from radical Islam or Marxists knows that they are constantly at risk of being labeled racist, and shut down by individuals and organizations who do not want the truth to be known. The efforts to silence our voices will increase. We are all in this fight together. Therefore, it would be greatly appreciated if all of you would post a notice on your blogs, urging your readers to support The Religion of Peace by sending protest e-mails to the offending companies. Islam and the thought police are coming after all of us. Free speech is in jeopardy. We need to pull together into a strong and united force to combat those who intend to crush us.

I have permission to make this appeal on their behalf and I am happy to do so.

Please write to the email addresses listed below and state clearly that The Religion of Peace – http://www.thereligionofpeace.com (include the url in the e-mails) is against violence, not racist and should be categorized appropriately under labels such as General News, Politics and Religion.

Anvil Cleanup Completed

It seems that I’ve built-up the Anvil to the point that I can hardly think of anything else to add to it, so now I’m busy refining it. In the past 48 hours I made many cleanups to code, the sidebar, links and fonts, as well as adding a nice statistics display and overhauling the Archives.

In fact, if you click on the Archives right now, you can see what I’m writing about for yourself. Older articles should now be much easier to browse through and locate thanks mainly to a terrific plugin called SRG Clean Archives.

Muhammad is No 2 in boy’s names in Britain

'Islam will dominate the world'
A very disturbing sign of the times in Eurabia from, ironically, The Times in the UK:

Muhammad is now second only to Jack as the most popular name for baby boys in Britain and is likely to rise to No 1 by next year, a study by The Times has found. The name, if all 14 different spellings are included, was shared by 5,991 newborn boys last year, beating Thomas into third place, followed by Joshua and Oliver.

Scholars said that the name’s rise up the league table was driven partly by the growing number of young Muslims having families, coupled with the desire to name their child in honour of the Prophet.

Muhammad Anwar, Professor of Ethnic Relations at Warwick University, said: “Muslim parents like to have something that shows a link with their religion or with the Prophet.”

Although the official names register places the spelling Mohammed at No 23, an analysis of the top 3,000 names provided by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) puts Muhammad at No 2 once the 14 spellings are taken into account. If its popularity continues — it rose by 12 per cent last year — the name will take the top spot by the end of this year. It first entered the Top 30 in 2000.

The spelling Muhammad, like all transliterations, comes from replacing the Arabic script with what is deemed its closest Latin equivalent. There are many versions in Britain, depending on where the family are from and variations in pronounciation.

Muhammad, which means ‘one who is praiseworthy’, is often given to boys as an honorary prefix and is followed by the name by which they are commonly known. It is regularly cited as the most common name in the world, though there is no concrete evidence.

Mufti Abdul Barkatullah, a former imam at the Finchley mosque in northwest London, said: “Parents who name their son Muhammad believe that the name has an effect on their personality and future characteristics. They are saying that this boy will be of good character.

What’s in a name? If a name truly does have power over the personality of a person, it would account for much; Muhammad was no choir boy.

“Some people may not really understand the history of the Prophet Muhammad and the name but they still want the association so they can be recognised as one of his followers.

Or perhaps they do understand the history of the man and they want to emulate a pedophile and murderer? No wonder the imam, who must be very familiar with the history of Muhammad, wants to leave that door open to conjecture.

“In Arab countries, the name Muhammad is said when you don’t know the name of someone. On the sub-continent, it is different: Muhammad can be used either before or after another name.

“When you get to the UK, it is essentially about translating the sound of the Arabic into English. A nonArab Muslim would have the name ending in -ed while an Arab Muslim would adopt the -ad ending.”

Overall, Muslims account for 3 per cent of the British population, about 1.5 million people. However, the Muslim birthrate is roughly three times higher than the nonMuslim one.

As of this writing, the current U.S. population is 302,017,961. It is believed that roughly 6 million Americans are Muslims. Additionally, we shouldn’t forget to toss in upwards of 20 million illegals. How many illegals are Muslims I do not know, but you can bet more than a few. This puts the percentage of Muslims in the United States at roughly 2%. But don’t rest easy. It is believed that the Muslim population in the U.S.A. already outnumbers our Jewish population, a far older American community. This means the birthrate among Muslims in the United States is just as high as it is in Europe.

Statistics from the ONS show that Muslim households are larger than those headed by someone of another religion. In 2001, the average size of a Muslim household was 3.8 people while a third contained more than five people.

According to data from CACI Information Solutions, men who are named Muhammad are 5x times more likely to go on holiday in Asia and twice as likely to live in Yorkshire than most other people.

Additionally, a man named Muhammad is most likely to be aged between 25 and 34 and to have an average salary of £25,000.

The leading name for girls born to Muslim parents in 2006 was Aisha [Note from Foehammer: see #63 in this link for more information], in 110th place. Its meaning is ‘wife of the Prophet’ or ‘life’.

All this got me to wondering — why do we not know for sure how many Muslims are in the United States. Well, by law we have no way of knowing for sure. That’s right. I said, by law. Here’s the actual information from the U.S. Census Bureau:

The U.S. Census Bureau does not collect data on religious affiliation in its demographic surveys or decennial census. Public Law 94-521 prohibits us from asking a question on religious affiliation on a mandatory basis; in some person or household surveys, however, the U.S. Census Bureau may collect information about religious practices, on a voluntary basis. Therefore, the U.S. Census Bureau is not the source for information on religion, nor is the Census Bureau the source for information on religious affiliation.

So, apparently we have to guess. The “true Muslims” in the United States have yet one more thing to love about a system that they can manipulate to destroy us.

    Sleep well, Jack.

26% of ‘fighting age’ Muslims in America support Jihad

    Islamberg
Yes, that’s right, 26% of young adult Muslims wouldn’t mind seeing you blown up “in order to defend Islam from its enemies.” That means that if they could attach a bomb to the Anvil and send these pages sailing into the stratosphere, they’d be all for it.

Islam has enemies. I’m one of them. I get to be “blowed up good”, too. (My apologies to Second City for that allusion.)

Now, when you read this New York Post article, pay very close attention to the language coming from the Muslim respondents. I’ve put things in bold-type that should make you read “between the lines”, things that should alarm you in that extra-special alarming way. For instance, Jihadists will always seek to find a mandate to attack enemies in a “defensive” manner, because self-righteous reasons most suit zealots. Look around the world and you will always find Hammas or Hezbollah or al-Qaeda or Iranian mullahs manufacturing reasons for their outrageous actions and terrorism, all in the name of “self-defense”, like when the Iranians kidnapped those British sailors but claimed they were in Iranian waters.

And even the Muslims that might seem so innocuous today, could so very easily be lying or turned into your enemy tomorrow. Or they are raising your future killers in their homes and in our schools until the “time is right” for the New Caliphate.

Even more alarming? Look at these percentages and remember that truly tiny minorities in their countries at the time, like Mussolini’s Italy or Hitler’s Germany, turned entire populations towards world war. So, how are we supposed to just ignore far larger ripples in the waters of the USA and say that “we accept Islam” in our midst? I’ve already stated quite clearly how I feel about that idea.

As you read this next article, decide for yourself what the Muslims in America really mean, what they intend for themselves and how far you might trust them. But here’s one last thing I have to say on all this. I have a barometer for trusting people. It’s quite simple really:

Would you trust a Muslim to babysit your kids?

If you answer NO to that question, then you’re already aware of the problems with Islam, and guess what — you’re smarter than you think you are.

Onward to the latest “good news” from Islam:

TIME BOMBS IN OUR MIDST By DOUGLAS MONTERO and ANDY SOLTIS

One out of four young U.S. Muslims believe suicide bombings against innocent civilians are OK to defend Islam, a disturbing new poll revealed yesterday.

The nationwide survey - one of the most exhaustive ever conducted of American Muslim attitudes - also found widespread doubt that Islamic terrorists carried out the 9/11 attacks.

But at the same time, three out of four U.S. Muslims are worried about the rise of Islamic extremism around the world - and more than 60 percent are “very concerned” it will grow in America.

The survey - revealing possible radicalization of homegrown American Muslim youth - included more than 1,000 of the nation’s estimated 2.35 million Muslims and was conducted in English and several foreign languages.

The most shocking responses came when those surveyed were asked whether suicide bombings and other violence against civilians can be justified “in order to defend Islam from its enemies.”

Thirteen percent said it can be justified, at least on rare occasions.

Among those under age 30, that 13 percent doubled to 26 percent.

Young New York Muslims questioned yesterday said attacks on innocent victims are wrong.

Ah, yes, but what’s an “innocent victim” in the eyes of “true Muslims”?

But they said they can understand why foreign Muslims would sacrifice their lives against soldiers in conditions they consider “war.”

“If it’s for no reason, then it’s no good. If it’s in self-defense, to protect others, then it is right,” said Youns Hussein, a 21-year-old store owner from Brooklyn of Yemeni descent.

The relatively high poll support for suicide attacks deeply worried many experts yesterday.

“It is a hair-raising number,” said Radwan Masmoudi, president of the Washington-based Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy.

The poll question didn’t specify whether the suicide bombings being asked about would be in the United States or in other countries.

Among the poll’s other disturbing findings was that only 40 percent of U.S. Muslims believe that Arabs carried out the 9/11 attacks. Another 28 percent don’t believe it - and 32 percent said they had no view.

Among 28 percent who doubted that Arabs were behind the conspiracy, one-fourth claim the U.S. government was responsible.

Only 26 percent of American Muslims believe the U.S.-led war on terror is a sincere effort to root out international terrorism.

When it comes to U.S. military operations, three out of four people surveyed said the decision to go to war in Iraq was wrong - and 48 percent said using force in Afghanistan was wrong.

The poll found homegrown support for al Qaeda. Five percent of those surveyed had a “very favorable” or “somewhat favorable” view of the terrorist group. But 58 percent had a “very unfavorable” opinion.

And only 3% of Germans were what we would classify as Nazis when the National Socialist German Workers Party first rose to power. Getting the ‘Big Picture’ yet?

On Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, The Post found mixed views among Muslims about suicide bombing and 9/11.

Mostafa Basraoui, 52, a chef, said his religion does not allow suicide under any circumstances.

“In Islam, the theory of killing yourself doesn’t exist,” he said.

But throwing your life away in the cause of Jihad does. This might not amount to literal suicide, but striving to fight in a way that ultimately has no hope of survival surely fits the bill when it comes to Islamic Jihad. Oh, you tricky, tricky Muslim apologists.

Abderrahim Afennah, 24, a janitor from Morocco who lives in Manhattan, said he was “completely against” suicide attacks “because I consider it terrorism.”

But he and many others also said Muslims were not behind 9/11.

“I do believe people who are not Muslims did it intentionally to harm the view people have of Muslims,” he said.

Ali Ismail, 24, a New-York-born Palestinian who owns two grocery stores, agreed.

“I think it was the government, President Bush, so that he could have a reason to go into Afghanistan, Iraq - and before you know it he’ll be in Iran,” said Ismail.

Some suggested Jews carried out the World Trade Center attacks.

“Some people say it was the Jews. They just wanted to make the Arabs look bad,” one Muslim teenager told The Post.

Yes, because we all know that the Arab Muslims need help in looking “bad” to the rest of the world….

A St. John’s University graduate student, who gave his name only as Sam, expressed mixed views on suicide bombing.

“I don’t know if it’s wrong and I don’t know if it’s right,” he said. “Murder is wrong, but why, when you go to war, it’s all right to kill?”

He added, “I don’t agree that if you walk into a day-care center and do it” it’s acceptable.

The Pew research found most Muslims say they have moderate views, middle-class values and are adjusting to America. Seventy-eight percent described themselves as “very happy” with their lives.

But when asked if they considered themselves an American or a Muslim first, only 28 percent said American.

    *DANGER, WILL ROBINSON* *WARNING, WARNING*

The survey also found contrasting views of what it’s like to be an American Muslim after Sept. 11, 2001.

Fifty-three percent said life has become “more difficult” while 40 percent said it hasn’t changed very much.

And despite reports of anti-Muslim discrimination, 73 percent said they had never been a victim of it in America, the poll found.

Answer: That’s because those reports are lies perpetuated by organizations like CAIR in order to create more political and legal inroads for the future Islamic agenda.

The survey found U.S. Muslims are optimistic - even about the Mideast conflict. Sixty-one percent believe a way can be found for both Israel to exist and for the rights of Palestinians to be respected.

    Among other poll findings:

    * 71 percent agree that in America, “most people who want to get ahead can make it if they’re willing to work hard.”

    * 43 percent said U.S. Muslims should “mostly adopt American customs and ways of life.”

    * 72 percent said religion was “very important”.

    * 61 said homosexuality should be discouraged.

In my opinion, the Muslims to fear are not at all “radicalized” or “extreme” with regards to Islam. The Muslims that use those labels are, again, either lying to hide their true intentions, or they aren’t “good Muslims” themselves, and just as likely spend their secret time viewing porn or drinking alcohol as they might pray five times a day. So, who are you going to believe?

I’ve learned to trust my instincts on this. Call me crazy, but I want Islam outlawed in the United States and I’ll stick to that idea for now until someone comes up with a better solution.

35% of Democrats believe George W. had prior knowledge of 9-11

Rosie O'Donnell - Queen of Talk Show anti-American propaganda
Being a registered Independent, I have no party affiliation in the United States, but it’s obvious I lean to the Right and not the Left on most subjects. If it isn’t obvious why, then the folks over at Little Green Footballs posted a survey result that should make things clearer. LGF: 35% of Democrats Are Truthers:

If you need more evidence than a quick look at any left-wing blog that the Democrat Party has become the party of derangement, denial, conspiracy theories and blind hatred, a new Rasmussen poll shows that 35% of Democrats believe Bush knew about the 9/11 attacks in advance.

U.S. targeting Islam, many Muslims in poll say

Amazingly, no matter how much we perceive that our governments are appeasing Muslims and denying the global conflict with Islam, the Muslims themselves are hellbent on portraying themselves as victims again. Propaganda is well utilized by our Islamic enemies, I’ll give them credit where it’s due. They are masters of deceit and wordplay, playing possum and playing the martyr. It’s worked for Islamists for centuries.

Unfortunately, it won’t work forever and I certainly mean to be a part of that cure. Truth shall prevail and Islamofascist scum can cry more.

Oh, my! Did I just offend someone?

Some more lies, damn lies and statistics for this week:

WASHINGTON — Majorities in Egypt, Morocco, Pakistan and Indonesia say undermining Islam is a likely goal of U.S. foreign policy and many are unconvinced that Al Qaeda committed the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, according to a poll released Tuesday in Washington.

The survey by the University of Maryland’s Program on International Policy Attitudes questioned 1,000 or more people in each country. A majority of those surveyed in Morocco and in Indonesia, which has the largest Muslim population of any country, said it is a goal of the U.S. war on terror to “spread Christianity” in the Middle East.

“While U.S. leaders may frame the conflict as a war on terrorism, people in the Islamic world clearly perceive the U.S. as being at war with Islam,” program director Steven Kull said in a statement.

Well, look at that — many Muslims and I have something in common. Who’d have thunk it? But who started this war if it wasn’t Muhammad? Answer me that, honest Muslims. I think they need to stop with the half-truths. The war isn’t just between Islam and the United States. If it was there wouldn’t be bombings in the Philippines, India, Spain, England, Africa, et al. Really, Islamists, your continuing audacious twisting of the truth is bordering on a mass comedy routine.

Since 9/11, President George W. Bush has maintained that the United States targets only those who commit violence in the name of Islam, not the religion itself.

In Egypt, 92% of those surveyed said they believe it is a probable or definite U.S. goal to “weaken and divide the Islamic world.” In Morocco, 78% of those questioned said they agreed, as did 73% of those in Indonesia and urban Pakistan.

Only 28% of Egyptians, 26% of Indonesians, 35% of Moroccans and 2% of urban Pakistanis said they believe Al Qaeda was behind 9/11, the poll found.

Thirty-eight percent of Egyptians blamed the United States or Israel for the attacks, as did 20% of Indonesians, 31% of Moroccans and 28% of urban Pakistanis.

Conducted between Dec. 9 and Feb. 15 using in-home interviews, the surveys have a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points, except for Pakistan, where the margin is 4 points.

While urban and rural people were polled in Morocco, Indonesia and Pakistan, the survey didn’t report findings from rural Pakistan because people there were unfamiliar with many of the issues in the survey, according to the pollsters.

Spreading Christianity in the Middle East was probably or definitely a U.S. goal, said 67% of Moroccans, 64% of urban Pakistanis and 61% of Indonesians.

The survey group said it wasn’t allowed to ask the question in Egypt.

Barbarism. That’s what we are faced with. Beware any people that seek to kill you in the name of “God”, especially when God has nothing to do with it.

34 Deaths by Islamic Murderers While I ‘Ignored Islam’

The Religion of Peace keeps careful track of deaths by jihad, Islamic terror, Islamic sectarian violence and the like. Here are the results from March 16, 2007. 34 deaths, 92 injuries.

March 16, 2007 - ignoring Islam didn't stop the killing

So, unfortunately, ignoring Islam does not stop the violence created by it. I’m very disappointed. I was hoping the ostriches in the audience knew something I didn’t.

Notice there’s already one Islamic murder for today.

    Jihad’s campus collaborators

    Dearborn Islamic Center
From Caroline Glick at the Jerusalem Post, a very revealing look into the pro-Islam tendencies on university campuses and, even more disturbing, the very real trend of Muslim violence against American civilians. First an excerpt and then the start of the entire article:

Fordham University is far from alone in providing a platform for Holocaust deniers. Last Thursday the Dean’s office at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology co-sponsored an event on the Arab-Israel conflict called, “Foreign Policy and Social Justice: A Jewish View, a Muslim View.” The man invited to provide the Jewish view was Dovid Weiss, a member of the crackpot Neturei Karta sect. Weiss rose to prominence when he traveled to Teheran last December to participate in Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s Holocaust denial conference.

While MIT and Fordham were hosting Holocaust deniers in the name of intellectual freedom, their fellow universities were hosting “Israel Apartheid Week.” As part of their efforts to criminalize the Jewish state, Arab and Jewish speakers at “Israel Apartheid Week” events refer to Israel as “1948 Palestine” and show propaganda films portraying IDF soldiers and Israeli civilians in Judea and Samaria as murderers.

This kind of “debate” is given the go-ahead by college deans while many Conservative speakers are shutdown before they even get to campus, and if that doesn’t work, they’re shutdown on campus by radical-Left hooligans. To say the situation at our universities today is grim testimony to word-policing and the birthing of fascism is a glaring understatement. This is what happens when the circle of ideologies flows too far in one direction or the other. One only has to go too far to the Left or Right to end up at the same very dangerous spot, and on campus, I know from my own experiences beyond just the countless reports to substantiate them, that the Left is in control with a grip of iron.

I encourage you to read this entire article:

The general tendency of Westerners is to view global jihad as a foreign policy issue. But today it is clear that it is also a domestic policy issue.

Over the weekend The Sunday Telegraph reported that a recently circulated British intelligence report warned: “The terrorist threat facing Britain from home-grown al-Qaida agents is higher than at any time since the September 11 attacks in 2001.”

After foiling the jihadist plot to down US-bound British passenger aircraft last summer, MI5 director Eliza Manningham-Buller claimed that there are some 1,600 British Muslims actively involved in plotting attacks against Britain. According to the intelligence report cited in the Sunday Telegraph, today that number exceeds 2,000.

As one senior British political source told the newspaper, “The Security Services have constantly warned that the task of countering Islamic terrorism is a daunting one. There will be more attacks in Britain.”

It is not surprising that Britain faces the specter of mass attacks carried out by its own citizens in the name of Allah. Repeated exposes of the goings-on in British mosques and in supposedly “moderate” British Muslim communal organizations have shown unequivocally that they are being used as indoctrination centers for jihad.

A poll published last month by Britain’s Policy Exchange think tank bore out the poisonous impact this indoctrination has had on young Muslims in the country. Thirty-seven percent of British Muslims between the ages of 16-24 would rather live under Sharia law than under British Common Law; 36 percent think Muslims should be killed if they convert to another religion; 13 percent admire al-Qaida and similar terror groups; and a whopping 74 percent of young British Muslims believe women should wear veils.

WHILE IT is true that in the US the danger of home-grown jihadists to national security is lower than it is in Britain, it is also true that there is a growing phenomenon of jihadist violence being perpetrated by Muslim men against American civilians in the name of jihad.

Ten days ago, the Investors Business Daily published an editorial enumerating a partial list of acts of terrorism carried out by Muslim men against their fellow Americans since the September 11 attacks. Most recently, Sulejman Talovic entered a shopping mall in Salt Lake City, murdered five and wounded four unsuspecting shoppers before being killed by an off-duty police officer.

As was the case when Derrick Shareef, another Muslim male, was arrested in early December for plotting to carry out a similar attack at a shopping mall in Illinois just before Christmas, the media and the law enforcement agencies covering the Salt Lake City massacre have made light of the fact that the perpetrator was a Muslim.

While Talovic is dead and so cannot explain his motives to authorities, Shareef was arrested after telling an FBI informant of his plans to murder Jews specifically and Americans in particular for Allah. As Shareef told the informant, “I swear by Allah man, I’m down for it too. I’m down for the cause. I’m down to live for the cause and die for the cause, man.”

SHAREEF’S protestations of jihadist ardor made little impression on either federal authorities or the media. Upon announcing Shareef’s arrest, US Federal Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald insisted that he was acting on his own and that he had no outside inspiration for his decision to commit mass murder for Allah. As was the case with Talovic and with Naveed Afzal Haq, who murdered one woman and wounded five during his shooting rampage at the Seattle Jewish Federation last July, the media and federal authorities have hushed up and failed to investigate the jihadist motives for the Illinois attacker or link him to any larger phenomenon.

The Swamp: Americans like North Korea more than Iran

Lies, damned lies and statistics, but in this particular case, I’d say the numbers are accurate. From the Swamp @ the Chicago Tribune:

North Korea, that secretive Communist state headed by dictator Kim Jong Il, has improved its standing with the American people. But only slightly, just enough to take it out of last place in a ranking of how Americans feel about countries around the world. Last place now belongs to Iran.

Wishful Spin Alert: Poll Finds Religion Not To Blame For Islam Tension

    Are you blind too?

The statistics in the following report are interesting, but I don’t put much faith in any pollsters that attempt to divert me from the obvious with numbers. In effect, what this poll is attempting to claim is that Islam is not to blame for the violent acts of Muslims. If anyone believes this, I have some swampy land to sell you. Still, to show that I have no fear of facts (and less of manufactured facts), here’s the story for your approval or otherwise. From Scoop:

The global public believes that tensions between Islam and the West arise from conflicts over political power and interests and not from differences of religion and culture, according to a BBC World Service poll across 27 countries.

Ok, let’s stop right there. That is one helluva claim. The “global public” — why not say the “entire world” and be done with it, because that’s the crazy implication. Continuing…

While three in ten (29%) believe religious or cultural differences are the cause of tensions, a slight majority (52%) say tensions are due to conflicting interests.

The poll also reveals that most people see the problems arising from intolerant minorities and not the cultures as a whole. While 26 percent believe fundamental differences in cultures are to blame, 58 percent say intolerant minorities are causing the conflict – with most of these (39% of the full sample) saying that the intolerant minorities are on both sides.

Ok, stop again. Now wasn’t that predictable? “Both sides” are to blame. The hypothesis that intolerant minorities (i.e. Muslims in Britain, France, et al) are to blame for tensions starts out well in that paragraph, but then suddenly, the last sentence attempts to wipe that away. I’m not buying it. What do you think?

The idea that violent conflict is inevitable between Islam and the West is mainly rejected by Muslims, non-Muslims and Westerners alike. While more than a quarter of all respondents (28%) think that violent conflict is inevitable, twice as many (56%) believe that “common ground can be found.”

Ok, so 28% of the people polled are wise, 56% are wishful thinkers. Just my opinion, of course. Carry on pollsters…

The survey of over 28,000 respondents across 27 countries was conducted for the BBC World Service by the international polling firm GlobeScan together with the Program on International Policy Attitudes (PIPA) at the University of Maryland. GlobeScan coordinated the fieldwork between November 2006 and January 2007.

“Most people around the world clearly reject the idea that Islam and the West are caught in an inevitable clash of civilizations,” said Steven Kull, director of the Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland.

BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZTTT!!!! Oh, Mr. Kull, come on now. Here we go again. A poll of a few thousand people and he’s making bloated statements like that. I know I have my own agendas here on the Anvil, but isn’t it obvious that these pollsters have theirs? Let’s think about it this way — even if what this poll is claiming is true, then how is it that the “minority of extremists” are tying up NATO in Afghanistan again after a recent admission that the Taliban is reconstituting? How is it that we always hear the statements that “if we don’t fight them there, we’ll be fighting them here” — who the hell are “them” if the majority of the world wants to hold hands, and the Muslims especially? I’m sorry, I know I’ll be poked for being biased, but I’m calling bullsh*t on this poll right now. But, continue….

Doug Miller, president of GlobeScan, added: “Perhaps the strongest finding is that so many people across the world blame intolerant minorities on both sides for the tensions between Islam and the West.”

    Views in More Detail

Asked about the source of tensions between Islam and the West, the most common view in 24 of the 27 countries surveyed is that they arise “from conflicts about political power and interests”— endorsed by 52 percent overall. Another three in ten (29%) say that tensions primarily arise from “differences of religion and culture.” This is the dominant view in one country (Nigeria), while two countries have equal numbers taking both points of view (Kenya and Poland).

I have to interrupt just to remind my readers that Islam is a political ideology. So, again, Islam isn’t the problem, but over 50% of those polled blame “conflicts about political power and interests”? Think on that one. But, I interrupted again…

Respondents were also asked whether tensions arise from fundamental differences between the cultures as a whole or from intolerant minorities. Only 26 percent say they are due to differences in culture, while 58 percent attribute these tensions to intolerant minorities—with 39 percent saying that these intolerant minorities are on both sides, 12 percent saying they are primarily on the Muslim side, and 7 percent saying they are mostly on the Western side. The view that the problem arises from intolerant minorities is found in 24 of the 27 countries surveyed, with two countries (Brazil and the UAE) equally divided between the two points of view and with one in two Nigerians (50%) saying fundamental differences are the cause.”

That is the third time we’ve heard “intolerant minorities on both sides” — can I please now ask, what about the intolerant majorities? Do majorities get a chance to say “No!” to anything anymore? For instance, NO to Islam in the United States where there are only 6-7 million Muslims and 250 million everybody else. Sorry, I just had to…

Asked whether “violent conflict is inevitable” between Muslim and Western cultures or whether “it is possible to find common ground,” an average of 56 percent say that common ground can be found between the two cultures, which is the most common response in 25 countries. On average almost three in ten (28%) think violent conflict is inevitable; Indonesia is the only country where this view predominates, while views are divided in the Philippines.
The belief that it is possible to find common ground between Islam and the West rises with education from 46 percent among those with no formal education to 64 percent among those with post secondary education.
