Filed under the “Trust no one” category and going right along with some of my thoughts from earlier this year and weapons caches found in the hands of our enemies, from the Pamela Hess via the AP:
China and Russia are spying on the United States nearly as much as they did during the Cold War, according to the top U.S. intelligence official.
Mike McConnell, the director of national intelligence, says in testimony prepared for a Tuesday congressional hearing that a law passed last month expanding the U.S. government’s eavesdropping power is needed to protect not just against terrorists but also against more traditional potential adversaries, such as those two Cold War foes.
Here’s an excerpt from an article that was brought to my attention this morning (hat-tip: Terp Mole) from the University of Michigan’s Michigan Daily:
When we fight a war to eliminate an Islamic fundamentalist insurgency, while we claim to not be waging a war on Islam, naturally some people are confused. We ascribed political meaning to the term, and that has consequences.
We must learn to refer to a terrorist as a terrorist and nothing more. As President Bush repeatedly preaches, Islam is a religion of peace. We must cease equating terrorists with members of a peaceful religion, unless we truly want to cause a tenth crusade.

What we are all witnessing here is the price of dealing with Muslims when they are feeling brazen and confident and holding many weapons capable of vast destruction. Understand, please, that this is only going to escalate with time unless decisive blows are struck against Saudi Arabia, Syria and Iran. Egypt might even get involved if the Arab-Muslim states smell the blood of Israel.

in Iraq and U.S. Military.
Every single day for months the majority of the press, both foreign and domestic, has concentrated deliberately on anything negative coming from Iraq. But I think it’s important to keep pointing out that there are absolute positives every minute in that war-torn nation and life is obviously getting back on track. For every American soldier that gives a soccer ball out to some Iraqi school children and then decides to join in the game, the value of this kind of ambassador can not be underestimated.

A report that every American should take seriously:
The FBI is worried about possible terrorist attacks over the Fourth of July weekend, according to a weekly bulletin issued to law enforcement agencies and obtained by Fox News.
“Although the U.S. intelligence community possesses no specific credible threat reporting that terrorists are planning to target July 4th celebrations, we know the U.S. homeland remains a top Al Qaeda target,” the report states.
It adds that the Department of Homeland Security (search) and the FBI “remain concerned about the intent of terrorists to conduct large-scale attacks in the United States.”

What good are definitons? Here you go, about the best I’ve seen; a definition from a New York Times review of the new book The Anatomy of Fascism by Robert O. Paxton — the author’s definition of fascism. The words are chilling, and you’re about to see why :
“A form of political behavior marked by obsessive preoccupation with community decline, humiliation or victimhood and by compensatory cults of unity, energy and purity, in which a mass-based party of committed nationalist militants, working in uneasy but effective collaboration with traditonal elites, abandons democratic liberties and pursues with redemptive violence and without ethical or legal restraints goals of internal cleansing and external expansion.”
